NMB launches mobile payments system in Tanzania

Nov 11, 2011

Some Tanzanians can now use their mobile phone to pay different bills and taxes.

NMB has launched a new free payment system that means its customers no longer have to spend time waiting at taxpaying points, the Citizen reports.

Instead, they can deposit money for paid TV and water bills, as well as personal income and property taxes, using their handsets.

It is hoped this will make the process easier for Tanzanians and reduce the number of late payments.

Commissioner-General of the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) Harry Kitilya said the development will be particularly useful because it will enable people to avoid the traffic jams and bank queues in Dar es Salaam.

He added that it will improve tax collection "tremendously" and make life easier for the TRA.

According to Consultative Group to Assist the Poor, Tanzania has one of the world's fastest growing mobile money markets, with women being one of the driving factors of this uptake as two-thirds have an account of this kind.ADNFCR-2976-ID-801093264-ADNFCR
