The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has commended efforts to boost small businesses in Mauritania.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has commended efforts to boost small businesses in Mauritania.

According to Christine Lagarde, managing director of the body, authorities in the Maghreb nations have been keen to establish a "transparent and equitable" model of growth and private sector development in the region.

This, she noted, has taken place at a time when significant political and social changes are taking place.

Ms Lagarde said these changes are necessary in order to boost job creation and ensure everybody is able to share the benefits of growth.

Creating an environment that encourages entrepreneurship and innovation was flagged up as a priority.

She argued this will put small and medium-sized enterprises "at the centre of economic development to help spur the productive potential of the people of the Maghreb".

Ms Lagarde added that the creation of the Maghreb Bank for Investment and Foreign Trade represents a step towards achieving this outcome, as it will "facilitate Maghrebian private sector investment".ADNFCR-2976-ID-801520953-ADNFCR
