In a bid to further enhance the professionalism and growth of Uganda's insurance industry, the Insurance Institute of Uganda (IIU) is hosting its first international conference on February 28th.

The emphasis will be on risk management in the sector, as shown by the title of the conference "Insurance, The Rise of a New Dawn - Managing Emerging Risks in a developing economy".

On this 50th
anniversary of the IIU, 150 participants are scheduled to attend from across the East African Community (Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi and South Sudan). Various partner organisations will also be present, including institutes from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Malawi, and the Chartered Insurance Institute of London.

Geoffrey Kihuguru, the Chairman of the governing council of the Insurance Institute of Uganda, is counting on the conference to help equip industry players with various skills and knowledge on how to grow the sector in the country, where insurance still covers only slightly over one per cent of GDP.

He also believes many development opportunities exist linked to oil exploration and mining, infrastructure development, the modernisation of agricultural practices and the resurgence of the East African community.ADNFCR-2976-ID-801695761-ADNFCR
