Rwandatel customers get access to BPR mobile banking

Nov 11, 2010

Banque Populaire du Rwanda (BPR) customers with mobile phones on the Rwandatel network can now use their handsets to transfer money to and from their bank accounts.

Similar agreements are already in place between BPR and MTN and Tigo - the nation's other mobile phone networks - and enable transactions to be carried out any time of day, the New Times reports. Chief Executive Officer of BPR Herman Klaassen was quoted by the news source as saying the service has proven popular with customers since being introduced. "We have so far registered about 30,000 users and 50,000 transactions per week, ever since we launched the service six weeks ago," he remarked.

The bank operates 18 branches and 109 sub-branches across the country, as well as 61 outlets. Chief Commercial Officer for Rwandatel Francis Egbuson added the service will help cut down on queues at banks, describing it as "a convenient way of carrying out any money-related transaction".
