MasterCard in collaboration with Equity Bank have announced the introduction of Mobile Point of Sale (MPOS) technology to Kenya, in partnership with MPOS provider Ezetap.

"Our collaboration with Equity Bank and Ezetap to introduce this innovative technology to Kenya will help businesses and retailers boost sales through broadened acceptance", said Daniel Monehin, division president, MasterCard Sub-Saharan Africa, quoted by CIO East Africa.

"The MasterCard MPOS solution will allow Kenyan retailers who previously operated on a cash-only-basis to use mobile phones as point of sale (POS) terminals and accept electronic payments," he added.

The Ezetap solution consists of a card reader device that can be plugged into smart phones and tablets, which allows the retailer to swipe debit, credit or prepaid cards.

Inexpensive to deploy, the system should contribute to increasing the amount of cashless transactions in the country, thus improving the efficiency and security of transactions.

It is also hoped the initiative will bring the nation a step closer to achieving a cashless society and encourage financial inclusion.
