Standard Chartered, Airtel Africa and MasterCard have launched a virtual shopping card in Africa, allowing users to access a range of banking services via their mobile phone.

It will be initially introduced in Kenya, then progressively extended to the rest of the continent.

Airtel clients will be able to buy online goods from a wide range of MasterCard merchants
after requesting a 16 digit number single-use card with the amount their purchase is worth.

Once the transaction has been completed, a confirmation message will be sent to the customer's phone, le Potentiel newspaper reports.

N Arjun, Chief Projects and Transformation Officer at Airtel Africa said the continent has the ability to "leapfrog" previously used systems and embrace new mobile platforms.

He added that "the delivery of innovative and relevant solutions that tackle daily challenges affecting consumers plays an important role in bolstering a country’s economy through communication and mobile commerce".

The payment solution is compatible with all mobile phones and any operating system.ADNFCR-2976-ID-800735146-ADNFCR
