MFW4A launches Research Award during the African Microfinance WeekDakar, Senegal - The Making Finance Work for Africa
presented its first Research Award to two researchers in the financial sector development field
the 2015 African Microfinance Week, which was held in Dakar, Senegal, on July 1, 2015. Knowledge management is at the core of the Partnership's mission. MFW4A is committed to supporting the creation, contextualization and dissemination of knowledge and research on financial sector development in Africa. As part of its knowledge management activities, the MFW4A Partnership launched the MFW4A Research Award to honour researchers and encourage them to pursue and refine their work on the most pressing issues in financial sector development in Africa. For it first edition, the research papers were selected through an international call for papers organized by the Research Meets Africa Organising Committee. The call for research papers sought to attract research on innovations from various fields to contribute to growth, development and breakthroughs in financial inclusion in Africa.
The MFW4A Secretariat evaluated the submitted papers and awarded the prizes to two researcher papers: Dr. Boubacar BARRY and Colleagues, for the research paper "Field Facts for Crop Insurance Design: Empirical Evidence from Southern Burkina Faso"; and
M. Terfa W. ABRAHAM and Colleagues, for the research paper "Financial Innovation and Poverty Reduction: Evidence from Northern Nigeria". The papers were presented at the Research Meets Africa, a University Meets Microfinance (UMM) workshop organized in collaboration with ADA and Positive Planet during the African Microfinance Week on June 9, 2015.
Each of the researchers received an award of EUR 6000 of prize money. In addition to the award, the recipients will benefit from wider exposure of their work, particularly through the MFW4A Working Paper Series product, the website, the bi-weekly newsletter, and through invitations to participate in conferences and seminars organized by the various member institutions of the Partnership.
