DRC: New service allows withdrawals at other banks' ATMs

Dec 16, 2015

The Multipay Service went live this week.

The clients of banks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) can now withdraw money from ATMs that are not affiliated with their bank through the Multipay service.

The country's banking authorities have this week launched the interbank service, which currently counts four affiliated banks, namely RAWBANK, BCDC, ProCredit Bank and FBNBank.

According to CEO of GIE Interswitch Sébastien Mortier, the service will gradually include other banks.

"Currently, bank card holders mainly use their card to make cash withdrawals. With Multipay, these transactions will be possible on a broader network, and therefore with greater proximity," he said, quoted by the newspaper Le Potentiel.

The Multipay network currently has more than 300 ATMs and 1,000 electronic payment terminals through 33 cities in the DRC.

This initiative is expected to contribute to improving access to banking services in the country, where more than 95 per cent of the population has no bank account.ADNFCR-2976-ID-801808230-ADNFCR
