Azania Bank Limited has stressed its commitment to offering financial services to people living in rural parts of Tanzania.

According to managing director Charles Singili, Azania is planning to open new outlets in Geita and Mtwara in the coming months, in order to open up banking services to people outside major towns and cities.

Speaking to the Tanzania Daily News, he noted that only 15 per cent of consumers in the country currently have a bank account in place.

This, he stated, means banks need to design strategies to target these individuals, such as making their products and services available to those who live in more remote locations.

"Many banks have concentrated on fighting for big customers, especially in towns, without focusing on the potential of people in rural areas," Mr Singili commented.

He added that this effort should work in tandem with the roll-out of products specifically designed for consumers on average incomes.
