Making Finance Work for Africa and the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) are pleased to present a webinar on "Digital Transformation of African Capital Markets: The Case of M-Akiba" on May 08, 2018 at 10H30 GMT. In 2017, the Kenyan Government raised Kenyan Shillings (KES) 247.75 million (USD 2.4 million) through M-Akiba; an innovative public-private project, which allows investors to buy and trade government securities using mobile devices.
Designed by the National Treasury of Kenya through its Treasury Mobile Direct Programme, the M-Akiba bond needed a series of new laws to be passed before it could fully enter into the market. Both ICT and Financial markets actors - including Mobile Network operators, the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), the Central Depository Settlement Corporation (CDSC) and the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) - worked closely with private corporations in designing the product, developing the technical infrastructure and establishing trading rules.
The webinar will discuss lessons learned from the M-Akiba product development process, notably, the design, planning and execution phases. More specifically, the session will seek ideas to transform existing registered investors into actual buyers of government bonds.
