Understanding MFIs Reporting Burden: a study of the reporting burden for microfinance providers in Sub-Saharan Africa

Aug 01, 2011 | B. Barnett | MIX, The MasterCard Foundation

This paper presents findings from a study conducted by MIX in Sub-Saharan Africa on the burden that external reporting places on MFIs. The study focused especially on the collection and management of data related to loan and savings portfolios as well as accounting and financial data. The paper concludes that the need to collect data and report results will remain a critical part of microfinance operations. Emerging business opportunities will improve information management as the industry and individual institutions mature. It recommends standardized report formats or a redistribution model to change the dynamics and cost structure of reporting for MFIs.
