Investigation into collateral options for lending to micro and small enterprises

This paper presents an investigation conducted to determine whether collateral constraints are one of the causes for the perceived financing gap for micro and small enterprises (MSEs) in South Africa. The study further identifies risk management strategies utilized in other countries, which could become attractive to lenders in South Africa, and identifies policy options which could lift constraints in order to stimulate greater investment in the MSE sector.
