Building Inclusive Payment Ecosystems in Tanzania and Ghana

Jun 20, 2018 | M. Mattern, C. McKay | CGAP

This paper examines two Sub-Saharan African countries, Tanzania and Ghana, for lessons other countries can use to achieve their own success in developing inclusive payment ecosystems. To set the stage for analysis, the paper begins with case studies on the Tanzanian and Ghanaian experiences, recounting their journeys from the introduction of mobile money to today. The stories are told through the lens of five key components of inclusive payment ecosystems identified by CGAP through research in each country: regulatory approach, executive commitment and investment, competitive landscape, interconnected services, and compelling use cases.
