East African Women in Business Platform (EAWiBP)

est. May 2012

The East African Women in Business Platform (EAWiBP) was launched in May 2012, as a forum to bring together business and professional women from across the East African Community (EAC). EAWiBP aims to put in place mechanisms to address challenges faced by women-owned businesses within the region. The Platform draws its mandate from the Treaty for the Establishment of the EAC, particularly Chapter 25 and Articles 121 and 122, and is guided by the vision of becoming a women’s centre for intra and extra-EAC trade. EAWiBP is hosted by East African Business Council (EABC), a regional apex body for the private sector established in 1997 to ensure private sector participation in EAC’s integration process.

EAWiBP aims to “Position and Catalyze the Participation of Women in EAC’s Integration Process” as outlined in its Strategic Plan (2012-2015). The Platform pursues the following strategic objectives and results:

  • To Increase the effective participation of women in business in the EAC integration processes
  • To Improve economic contribution of women in business in the EAC Partner States
  • To Increase the progression of women-owned enterprises in the EAC from informal to formal status

EAWiBP is committed to the following activities:

  • Trade related knowledge strengthening of its membership; policy research and advocacy on issues related to trade participation and women’s economic empowerment
  • Business to Business (B2B) linkages and networking
  • Business Development Skills, including using ICT to grow business
