Uganda Insurers Association (UIA), the umbrella organization for all insurance companies, has intensified the drive to raise awareness on the need to insure vehicles.

The drive is in response to the low appreciation of the value of motor insurance and it primarily focuses on the basic principles of insurance, the available products, claims (compensation) process and who to speak to if a policy-holder is dissatisfied with the services of an insurer.

Recent UIA statistics show that only about 30 per cent of the vehicles on the road are insured. Last week, UIA officials led by Miriam Magala, the chief executive officer, set out to test public awareness with a prank on TV presenter Denzel Mwiyeretsi and few could have envisaged the reaction and impact it would have.

His BMW Convertible was carefully towed away from the parking space on Third street, Industrial area before one of the UIA officials prompted Mwiyeretsi to go for a meeting.

Upon reaching his parking spot, the socialite couldn't believe his car was gone and threatened to have the guards nearby arrested. He turned to social media to inform Ugandans about his predicament and request them to notify him in case anyone had information regarding his vehicle.

UIA officials saved him from misery by returning the car and later educated him about the benefits of motor insurance as well as the claims process. Read more on All Africa.
