Rwanda’s Financial Inclusion Success Story: Umurenge SACCO

Alliance for Financial Inclusion (AFI) | Alliance for Financial Inclusion (AFI)

This AFI case study presents the community savings and credit cooperatives known as Umurenge SACCOs. The SACCOs have attracted over 1.6 million customers, and these along with other MFIs currently serve almost the same number of the entire banking sector standing at 2.7 million. The introduction of Umurenge SACCOs, in conjunction with the expansion of bank and MFI branches, the introduction of agent banking, and the modernization of financial services such as mobile banking, ATMs and mobile money, have all helped to drive financial inclusion in Rwanda.
