Dear Reader,  

We are pleased to announce the addition of Gender and Finance to our list of focus thematic areas.

This section will shed light on a somewhat neglected aspect of the access to finance agenda which is gender and finance. It will evaluate its potential contribution to empowerment and to economic development on the continent.

Despite the existence of programs and a certain number of financial institutions dedicated on servicing women, there is still a long way to go to ensure equal gender access to financial services, particularly in rural areas. Women’s access to financial resources remains difficult and hampered by a wide range of constraints ranging from the lack of financial capability to the limited physical outreach of financial institutions. Rwanda's Central Bank governor Claver Gatete announced on Friday (February 15th) that several payment systems innovations will be implemented this year that will strengthen the core structure of the financial sector.

The Moroccan Treasury has announced that a bond issue by auction took place on February 19th. 

21.02.2013 | Zimbabwe's Central Securities Depository is expected to be operational in 2013
The Central Securities Depository (CSD) should be operational in Zimbabwe within the first half of 2013, it has been revealed.
