Microfinance and the Incompatibility of Outreach and Cost Efficiency

The past decades have seen significant growth rates for microfinance institutions (MFIs) in terms of providing financial services to poor households. Next to the growing number of clients, the number of MFIs went up as well. Given the changes in the MFIs landscape, one study explored possible trade-offs between outreach to the poor and efficiency of MFIs. In this blog, prof. Niels Hermes suggests that outreach and efficiency are indeed negatively correlated.
