Income Group: Upper Middle Income

Botswana’s financial sector is comparable in size to that of other counties in the region, but remains relatively smaller, less diversified, and less open than that of its middle-income-group peers. 

A cross-country comparison show that bank efficiency, as measured by net interest margins and bank cost-income rations, is broadly in line with both regional and income-group averages. Financial intermediation levels and credit to the private sector, however, remain below the income-group average.
